For starters, Moab, UT is an excellent way to try out off-roading. Truthfully, it embodies all of the characteristics that we typically look for in a trail- scenery, expanse, and challenge.
Poison Spyder, on the north end of Moab, UT, is a quick tour of what makes Moab, Moab. It has large stretches of fast desert terrain, a fair mix of slick-rock climbs and moderately technically obstacles , and constant scenery changes.
Arguably the best part of this trail is that it keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what’s next, regardless of how well you know the trail. The reason this is so significant is that areas such as Hell’s Revenge and Fins n’ Things can have a lot of redundant scenery- after a couple of trips through the park, you may start feeling ready for something different. As you start on Poison Spyder, you will begin to climb up a dusty, steep swtichback. There’s a handful of rocky sections that can be intimidating, taking the outside line on all will ensure the easiest route to the top. Once atop the plateau, approximately 20 minutes into the trail, the terrain will change colors into the classic khaki/tan and unveil a handful of 1′ to 2′ ledges. Overall the difficulty here isn’t significant given the amount of bypasses and ‘option-lines’- in our opinion, the first 3 miles of the trail is the hardest part. After this, the trail opens into large sections of sandy berms and high-speed runs across the plateau: be sure to look out the window for the array of rocky spines and sandstone formations to the south.
Once you take a lap through the Poison Spyder trail system, approximately 2-3 hours in SXS, be sure to head north for the Golden Spike trail if you wish for more of a challenge. While rated a 6-7/10 for a jeep-like vehicle, this trail can be very doable for experienced riders in a UTV with 30″ or larger tires. Bring a winch, bring water, and bring snacks- oh yeah, and don’t attempt in June-July (its hot).
